As of August 7, 2026, multiple large wildfires are burning across Harney and Malheur Counties in eastern Oregon. The fires, several of which are being managed together as the Burns Basin fires, have prompted evacuations, highway closures, and forest closures within the Malheur National Forest.

The Coleman Creek Fire, burning across Malheur and Harney Counties from its origin southwest of Warm Springs Reservoir, is spreading across the Malheur River toward Highway 20 and the community of Juntura (2).

Smoke from these fires is significantly affecting air quality across the region, impacting communities far beyond the fire perimeters.

What is the current containment status of the wildfires?

As of August 7, 2026, the five fires have burned a combined total of more than 500,000 acres, according to the National Interagency Fire Center.

The Coleman Creek Fire has burned 309,803 acres and is 76% contained.

The Second Flat Fire has burned 105,462 acres and is 77% contained.

The Bald Mountain Fire has burned 78,070 acres and is 55% contained.

The Hat Fire has burned 44,122 acres and is 99% contained.

The Jackass Butte Fire has burned 24,742 acres and is 92% contained.

Firefighting personnel, the Rangeland Fire Protection Association, county fire departments, and the Oregon State Fire Marshal are working around the clock to suppress and contain the fires while protecting structures. Conditions remain favorable for rapid fire growth, making containment efforts more challenging.

Are there any evacuation orders or alerts in place?

The Harney County Sheriff's Office has ordered Level 1 (Ready), Level 2 (Set), and Level 3 (Go) evacuations in the vicinity of the Second Flat Fire, including zones north of Burns, areas west of Hines, and portions of the Burns Paiute Reservation.

For the Coleman Creek Fire, a Level 3 (Go) evacuation order is in place for Juntura and the surrounding areas, with additional Level 1 and Level 2 notices in effect in Harney County.

Evacuation shelters have been established at Burns High School (1100 Oregon Ave, Burns, OR), which accepts pets and is open 24 hours, and at the Crane High School Dorms (43277 Crane-Venator Rd, Crane, OR), where limited livestock sheltering is available on-site.

Closures are in place on U.S. Highway 20 east of Juntura. The Malheur National Forest has also closed roads and areas of the forest in response to the Second Flat Fire.
