Chile Air Quality Alert

Is the air quality good in Chile?

As of June 8, 2026, air quality in central Chile remains poor, with major cities experiencing "unhealthy" to "very unhealthy" levels and high PM2.5 concentrations, posing health risks to residents, especially children and the elderly.

By 12:30 A.M. (Chile Standard Time, GMT-4), some urban centers recorded AQI readings between 100 and 300, prompting health warnings. Residents are advised to limit prolonged outdoor activity, wear masks outdoors, keep windows closed, and use air purifiers indoors.

While conditions fluctuate throughout the day, central Chile regularly experiences seasonal pollution episodes during the colder months. Studies conducted in Santiago and Temuco have confirmed that for every 50 µg/m³ increase in PM10 levels in 24 hours, there is an average increase of about 3% in general mortality, with increases in PM10 also associated with higher respiratory and cardiovascular mortality (1).

Which cities are affected by bad air quality in Chile?

As of June 8, 2026, several cities in central Chile are experiencing degraded air quality. Some of the affected cities include:

When will the air quality improve in Chile?

Research shows PM2.5 increases from April through July, then begins to decrease in September and October as spring arrives and atmospheric conditions become more favorable for pollutant dispersal.

Mean PM2.5 levels during the cold season from April through September are more than twice as high as those in the warm season from October through March. In the near term, isolated rainfall or stronger winds may offer brief relief (2).

Lasting improvement depends on consistent enforcement of restrictions on wood burning and vehicle emissions during pollution alert episodes.

What is causing poor air quality in Chile?

Firewood produces as much as 94% of fine particulate matter emissions in some Chilean cities according to the Ministry of Environment, with two million homes heated using solid biofuels nationwide, and the firewood market generating an estimated 800 million dollars annually (3).

Firewood smoke from residential heating is responsible for more than 90% of PM2.5 emissions in cities located between the O'Higgins and Aysén regions, where indiscriminate use of firewood for heating is the primary driver of seasonal air quality crises (4).

In Santiago, the situation is compounded by the city's position between the Andes and the Cordillera de la Costa, which creates a pocket where stagnant air accumulates and disperses slowly, while vehicle exhaust, fossil fuel power generation, and construction dust add a persistent pollution base throughout the year.
