Meerut MAP AIR QUALITY ANALYSIS AND STATISTICS

What information about air quality can be seen on the air pollution map for Meerut?

The air pollution map for Meerut can easily be found on the top left-hand side of the main city page. Click anywhere on the map and it will reopen as a new page dedicated to air quality in that region.

One of the first things to notice will be the overall colour of the map’s background. In August 2022, the colour was dark orange/brown colour. The explanation for the meaning of the various colours is given in the legend at the foot of the page.

The viewer will also notice some coloured discs on the map, each containing a number. This is the US AQI reading and is calculated by measuring the levels of six of the most commonly found pollutants in the city air. The colour of the discs reflects the air quality at that station. The US AQI reading is used as a standard when comparing air quality in different cities across the world. It is endorsed by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Checking back on the main city page, it can be seen that in August 2022, Meerut was experiencing a period of air quality which is classified as being “Unhealthy for sensitive groups” with a US AQI reading of 113. The levels of four pollutants were measured but it was the level of PM2.5 which is used as a benchmark. This level was 40.5 µg/m³ which is more than eight times higher than the 5 µg/m³ that the WHO set as a target figure. Although no level of pollution is healthy.

Is there any other information available on the air pollution page for Meerut?

Once the air pollution map for Meerut is opened in full-screen mode, the viewer will see four options appear down the left-hand side of the screen. The first option shows the position of the ground-level air monitoring stations which are situated in and around the city. They appear as coloured discs whose colour reflects the air quality as described in the first paragraph. The second and fourth options should be looked at at the same time because the second option shows the position of any fires burning in the vicinity and the fourth option shows the wind speed and direction. Together they will give a good indication as to whether or not the city will be affected by any ensuing smoke from the fires.

The third option is the most theatrical as it controls the background colour of the map. Currently, it is brown which indicates that the air quality is “Unhealthy for sensitive groups”. If this option is turned off, the map will revert to a more standard set of colours which some may find easier to understand.

On the far right of the screen can be seen a table which ranks world cities according to their levels of pollution.

Immediately beneath the map can be seen the number of stations which provide the air quality data. In August 2022, there were two stations providing this data and they were both operated by the local government.

Going further down the page will be a table which ranks the stations according to their air cleanliness. Currently, the station showing the highest levels of pollution is situated at Ganga Nagar, Meerut – UPPCB with a US AQI reading of 119.

Beneath that table is one which shows the popularity of the stations and shows how many people follow them. Ganga Nagar, Meerut – UPPCB is the most popular with over 23,600 followers.

Can areas of higher pollution be seen on the air pollution map for Meerut?

There are two methods of finding areas of higher levels of pollution on the air quality map for Meerut. When looking at the map, try and find the discs with the darkest colour and the highest US AQI number. Alternatively, scroll slightly down the page where a table will be seen that ranks all the local stations according to their level of pollution. Ganga Nagar, Meerut – UPPCB is the most polluted area of the city as already stated in the previous paragraph.

Is the source of the pollution shown on the air pollution map for Meerut?

The source of air pollution is not shown on the air pollution map for Meerut; however, the residents are in the grip of dust and smoke from garbage. Dust is a problem due to construction work and also due to potholes in the road. Sand and cement are being carried in open trucks and particles of dry garbage are becoming airborne. The garbage is not being picked up on time, so it is being set on fire. The situation becomes very bad in the morning and evening.

Dust is also flying due to the construction of the Rapid Rail Corridor on Delhi Road, but on the instructions of NCRTC, water sprinkling is done from time to time. However, this sprinkling of water is not enough. Due to the high heat, the effect of spraying lasts only a few minutes.

PM2.5 is used as a benchmark on the air pollution map for Meerut, but what is it?

Due to the increasing number of vehicles and the decreasing number of trees, the type and intensity of pollution is increasing every year. Air pollution reaches very dangerous levels in cities like Meerut. The reason for this is PM2.5 and PM10 particles present in the air. These particles cause great harm to everyone's health. When the level of these particles increases in the air, then difficulty in breathing also increases as does burning in the eyes etc.

PM is also called particulate matter, which is a mixture of solid particles and liquid droplets present in the atmosphere. The particles present in the air are so small that you cannot even see with the naked eye. Some particles are so small that they can only be detected using an electron microscope. Particle pollution includes PM2.5 and PM10 which are very dangerous.

PM2.5 refers to atmospheric particulate matter with a diameter of less than 2.5 micrometres, which is about 3 per cent of the diameter of a human hair. PM10 are those particles whose diameter is 10 micrometres and they are also called fine particles. Environmental experts say that PM10 is also called Respirable Particulate Matter.

It consists of dust, dust and fine particles of metal. PM10 and 2.5 dust increases more at the site of construction and by burning of garbage and straw.
