There is a lot of really interesting information about air quality on the air pollution map for Nacimiento and the link can easily be found on the main city page. This takes the form of the air pollution map which, when selected, will open up a new page filled with all relevant information about air quality.
When the new page first opens, the viewer will be met with a solid colour which acts as a representation of the current air quality. Colours can vary between pale green and dark maroon and are standardised across the entire IQAir website. Their exact meanings can be seen in the legend at the foot of the page. Currently, the map is dark green/yellow which shows the air quality as being “Moderate”.
Several coloured discs will also be seen dotted across the map. These show the sites of the ground-level air monitoring stations that provide the data about air quality. At the centre is a number which is the United States Air Quality Index reading or US AQI for short. It is calculated by taking measurements of up to six of the most prolific pollutants found in the city air. They are usually both sizes of Particulate Matter (PM2.5 and PM10), ozone, nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide and carbon monoxide.
Once the reading has been established, it is used as a metric when comparing air quality in different cities across the globe. It has the full backing of the World Health Organisation (WHO). Each of the stations can be explored independently when a new page will open which is dedicated to that specific area of the city. This can be invaluable when travel is imminent.
Briefly looking back at the main city page, it will be seen in the coloured band at the top of the page that Nacimiento was going through a period of “Moderate” air quality with a US AQI reading of 55. The main pollutant was PM2.5 with a measured level of 14 µg/m³ (microns per cubic metre) which is almost three times higher than the suggested target figure of 5 µg/m³, as recommended by the WHO. The colour of the band itself also depicts the present air quality.
Immediately below the air pollution map for Nacimiento can be seen the number of contributors there are and the number of stations they operate. In March 2023, there were two stations controlled by the government department known as the Ministerio del Medio Ambiente de Chile which operates eighty-nine stations throughout the country.
There is a lot more captivating material about air quality on the air pollution map for Nacimiento but the screen needs to be in full-screen mode for maximum benefits. This is achieved by selecting the icon at the top of the page which will expand it to full size.
When viewed in this way, a list of four choices will appear on the left-hand side of the screen. These can each be individually deactivated to see the full effect they have on the map.
The first option depicts the sites of the ground-level air monitoring stations there are in the area, but they will not all be under the jurisdiction of the city’s authorities.
The next option shows the position of any wildfires there are that might be burning out of control in the region. There were no signs of wildfires at the end of March 2023. If fires are detected option number four needs to be consulted because it shows the speed and direction of the prevailing winds and will give a guide as to where the ensuing smoke might drift.
The third option can change the colour of the map to reflect the present state of the air. If the air quality is good, then pale colours will become the backdrop to the page, but darker colours appear when the air quality gets worse. If the colour is too distracting, the option can be deactivated whereupon the map will revert to a more natural set of colours.
There are even more facts and figures on the right-hand side of the screen. The information is presented as a table which ranks the top seven most polluted cities in the world. The remaining participating cities can be found under the full-ranking section which will open several pages to reveal all the pertinent information.
Directly below the contributor’s category is the section which shows where the most polluted air quality stations are according to the readings obtained by them. Currently, the most polluted area is in the vicinity of the Club de Empleados station which published the US AQI reading of 65 which is classified as being “Moderate”. The second station was at Lautaro with a published US AQI reading of 55.
The next section lists the stations according to the number of loyal followers they each have. Currently, it is the station at Lautaro that has the most followers with 116. Club de Empleados comes in second with 46 followers.
Whilst the source of the polluted air is not shown directly on the air pollution map for Nacimiento it is generally known that in the southern cities, a lot of firewood is used and, on the other hand, the houses have poor thermal quality, especially those built before the year 2000.
Coyhaique, Padre Las Casas, Nacimiento and Rancagua are the four Chilean cities that are among the most polluted in all of Latin America.
Despite the fact that they are not measured in many cities, suspended particles of less than 2.5 microns (PM2.5) seem to be a better indicator of urban pollution than those that have been used up to now, PM10. This is because, on the one hand, its origin is largely anthropogenic, since PM2.5 largely comes from emissions from diesel vehicles in the city. On the other hand, the effects they have on our health are very serious, due to their great ability to penetrate the respiratory tract.
