As of September 12, 2025, two wildfires are burning north of Boise are affecting air quality in parts of Idaho and Montana.
The Rock Fire is mostly contained in Adams and Valley Counties, Idaho and has burned 2,813 acres (1). The fire is located near the Boise National Forest and is impacting areas around Tamarack, Donnelly, and the Upper French Creek Campground, which is currently closed due to the fire. The fire’s proximity to these communities and recreational areas is a significant concern for both residents and visitors.
The Elkhorn Fire has burned 1,779 acres and is active south of the Middle Fork of the Salmon River (2). While extremely remote from populated areas, smoke from the fire is likely impacting air quality in Idaho and Montana communities.
