Kaithal MAP AIR QUALITY ANALYSIS AND STATISTICS

Is there much exciting information about air quality on the air pollution map for Kaithal?

There really is a lot of very interesting information about air quality on the air pollution map for Kaithal. The map page is easy to reach from the main city page. Clicking on the picture of the map will open a new page which contains all the facts and figures about air quality for the city.

Once the map page is opened, the first thing to strike the viewer will be the striking colour of the page. This is a strong visual indication of the current air quality. Colours can range from pale green to dark maroon where the darker colours show worsening air quality. These colours are standard across the entire IQAir site. There could also be some coloured circles on the map which represent the locations of the ground-level air monitoring stations. Some of them on the map may not be under the direct control of the city but are filled with useful facts about that specific area.

The discs also carry a number at their centre which is the United States Air Quality Index or US AQI for short, reading for that station. This reading is calculated by taking the recorded levels of up to six of the most commonly found air pollutants found in the city air. These are usually both sizes of Particulate Matter (PM2.5 and PM10), nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide and ozone. Once the figure is established it is used as a metric when making comparisons between different places across the globe. It is encouraged by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Looking back at the main city page, it can be seen in the coloured banner across the top of the page that Kaithal was experiencing a period of air quality classified as being “Unhealthy for sensitive groups” with a US AQI reading of 141. This is also visually reflected in the colour of the banner. Levels of four of the main pollutants were measured but it is PM2.5 that is used as the benchmark. It had a recorded level of 51.7 µg/m³ which is almost ten and a half times higher than the suggested target figure of 5 µg/m³ as recommended by the WHO.

Just below the air pollution map for Kaithal can be seen the number of contributors there are that collate all the data regarding air quality. Currently, there is just one station which is a government department known as the Central Pollution Control Board.

Is there much more information about the state of the air on the air pollution map for Kaithal?

There is a lot more top-quality information about air pollution on the air quality map for Kaithal. The screen needs to be viewed in full-screen mode in order for all the information to be visible. This is achieved by selecting the icon at the top of the page which will reopen the page at maximum size.

Once viewed in this way, there will be four choices appearing on the left-hand side of the screen. These can all be turned on or off to get a better idea of the effects they have on the map.

The first option shows the location of all the ground-level air monitoring stations there are in and around the city. Each one can be explored further to see the conditions in that specific part of the city.

The second option will show the position of any wildfires that might be burning in the area. During January 2023, there were no reports of any such fires, however, when there are fires detected then option four needs to be looked at because it shows the speed and direction of the prevailing winds and will give a good indication of where the ensuing smoke might blow.

The remaining option changes the background colour of the map to reflect the current state of the air. When the air quality is poor, this colour will be quite dark and maybe confusing. If this is the case, the option can be deactivated and the map will take on a more subtle set of colours.

More information about air quality can be found on the other side of the page. A table will be seen here that lists the top seven most polluted cities in the world. Selecting the full-ranking section will open another page which will show all the world’s participating cities in descending order.

Just below the contributor’s category can be seen a list of the most polluted air quality stations, but because there is only one station in Kaithal it is the one at Rishi Nagar, Kaithal – HSPCB. Below are listed the most popular air quality stations. Again, it is the Rishi Nagar, Kaithal – HSPCB with almost 2,500 loyal followers.

Can the source of the polluted air be identified on the air quality map for Kaithal?

The source of the polluted air is not shown directly on the air pollution map for Kaithal but it is known that a lot of polluted air is due to the huge amount of stubble burning there is in the nearby areas. It is also noted that open burning of rubber scrap and plastic, along with heaps of garbage and dust, is a major cause of concern. Private vehicles, diesel generators, brick kilns and stone crushers are also contributors to the polluted atmosphere.

Particulate Matter is always quoted on the air pollution map for Kaithal, but how dangerous is it?

Environmental experts say that PM10 is called respirable particulate matter. The size of these particles is 10 micrometres. Particles smaller than this have a diameter of 2.5 micrometres or less. This includes dust, dirt and microscopic particles of metal. PM10 and PM2.5 increase due to dust, construction and burning of garbage and straw.

When the level of PM2.5 is high, then the level of haze increases and at the same time visibility decreases. Not only this, these particles enter the body while breathing. Due to this, along with difficulty in breathing, there is a risk of many other diseases. Children and the elderly are the worst affected by increasing levels of PM2.5 and PM10 in the air.
