AIR QUALITY ANALYSIS AND STATISTICS FOR Khlong Toei

Is the air in Khlong Toei polluted?

Observing the air quality data collected in Khlong Toei over the latter part of 2021, it can be seen that whilst there are not significantly high levels of air pollution present (although this can very quickly be subject to change depending on a number of factors), Khlong Toei did indeed maintain a level of air quality that was quite far from perfect, with US AQI readings reaching heights that would deem it mildly hazardous to some members of the population. A US AQI reading of 80 was recorded in late November of 2021, placing Khlong Toei into the higher end of the 'moderate' air pollution rating bracket. This would indicate that there would be a fair amount of smoke, haze and other polluting elements in the air, although not of a high enough level to cause noticeable distress amongst the general population. Other US AQI readings taken over November and October of 2021 show that Khlong Toei maintained its 'moderate' air quality rating, with the occasional dip down into the more appreciable 'good' rating bracket with lows of 24 and 27 being recorded. Of note is that there are forecasts for readings that go up considerably higher and as such the air in Khlong Toei may be subject to sudden spikes in air pollution which can cause harm to those that are exposed. Staying up to date with pollution readings as well as utilizing preventative measures can go a long way in safeguarding one's health in Khlong Toei, with these forecasts being found on both this page as well as the AirVisual app.

What are some of the main pollutants found in the air in Khlong Toei?

The main pollutants that can be found in the air throughout Khlong Toei are those that typically go into forming the US AQI aggregation, which includes among them the two main forms of particle pollution, PM10 and PM2.5. Out of both of these, the considerably smaller PM2.5 is the far more dangerous of the two, with its minute size allowing it to penetrate deep into the tissue of the lungs and bypass the body's natural defense systems. Other pollutants in the US AQI bracket include sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, ozone and carbon monoxide, along with pollutants such as black carbon and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) also being fairly prevalent, depending on the area as well as the industrial or anthropogenic activity taking place.

Is it safe to breathe the air in Khlong Toei and what are some health problems that may arise?

Continuous exposure to high levels of air pollution in Khlong Toei can cause many dangerous health conditions to occur, with this being particularly pertinent to those individuals who fall into the sensitive group demographic, which will be covered in slightly more detail further into the article. Despite certain groups being more at risk, healthy adults without any pre-existing health conditions may also find themselves at risk to the negative side-effects of polluted air in Khlong Toei, particularly if exposure takes place over a longer period of time. This is of more importance for those that that find themselves living near to much more highly polluted areas such as industrial districts or near busy roads, where the air quality is often of much poorer quality, with hazardous particles, smoke, smog and haze being far more prevalent in the atmosphere for much of the year. A larger number of ailments that may show themselves amongst the inhabitants, would be the shorter-term ones such as dry throat and coughs, as well as the accompanying chest pains and infections of the upper respiratory tract. These can usually typically resolve themselves in a relatively short amount of time when the exposure to air pollution is stopped or reduced. As such, they can be classified as more acute health issues amongst possible health problems present in Khlong Toei. With continuous air pollution exposure taking place, respiratory aggravation may also develop into more long-term, chronic health problems. The continuous chest infections sustained as well as the accompanying coughing can lead to the scarring of lung tissue, which can result in a significantly (and often permanent) decreased lung capacity. As well as this, the scarring or damage and inflammation to the tissue of the lungs can make one more vulnerable to a whole host of respiratory distress, with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) presenting itself. This is an umbrella term that refers to a multitude of different lung and respiratory tract conditions, typically resulting in shortness of breath as well as making an individual at greater risk of severe damage from pollution exposure. Some further conditions that fall under the COPD bracket are one such as pneumonia, bronchitis, emphysema as well as asthma. Other forms of damage that can happen within the body include increased risk of cancer, heart attacks, strokes and arrhythmias, as well as ischemic heart disease and many other cardiac or pulmonary conditions that can bring about decreased quality of life as well as lower life expectancy in Khlong Toei.

Which people are most at risk from pollution exposure in Khlong Toei?

Those that are more susceptible to the negative side effects of pollution exposure in Khlong Toei and may end up ill or even needing to visit the hospital as a result, in more serious cases, are groups such as the elderly, those with compromised immune systems or those with pre-existing health conditions. Other groups that should take extra care include pregnant women, those with hypersensitivity towards chemical compounds or particles, as well as small children, babies, and those who lead a sedentary lifestyle or engage in unhealthy activities such as smoking.

What are the main causes of air pollution buildup in Khlong Toei?

Air pollution is a prominent issue in Khlong Toei due to many of the same reasons that are present throughout other cities, towns, and provinces in Thailand, as well as those that affect neighboring countries, with Myanmar to the north being particularly noteworthy in this regard. These polluting sources include ones such as the burning of vast areas of forest and farmland, done using a practice known as slash and burn farming. Whilst this is much more prevalent in the northern regions of the country, it also can affect many other provinces further south, causing the pollution levels to spike by considerable amounts towards the end of the year, whereby they stay elevated into the earlier months of the following year. It is also an important factor to note that, due to its closer proximity to the capital city of Thailand, much more of its air pollution issues stem from many other causes beyond that of open burning practices and fires. These other causes of air pollution Khlong Toei include exhaust fumes emitted from the numerous vehicles in use, with a large amount of them being of aged or much poorer quality. Whilst there have been many regulations put into place to remove those more prominent pollution-causing vehicles from the roads, particularly in major cities, their use is still prevalent throughout many rural areas or outside the larger or more densely populated regions. Due to the extremely poor combustion process that takes place (often coupled with low-quality fuels or fossil fuels), considerably higher amounts of noxious oil vapors are released into the atmosphere, along with the usual chemical compounds such as nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, ozone (which forms afterward as the various pollutants are exposed to solar radiation, thus forcing a reaction take place which forms ozone, or smog as it is more commonly known as). Other causes include factories and power plants, which also rely heavily on burning fossil fuels to meet their power needs. Road repairs, construction sites, and other similar areas also release high amounts of ultrafine or coarse particles into the air, raising the PM2.5 and PM10 levels, which can cause prominent spikes in the particle pollution readings. Industrial activities and fumes from vehicles remain as one of the more prevalent causes of pollution in Khlong Toei, made worse by constant anthropogenic and industrial activities that leave pollution in their wake, as well as smoke from neighboring regions drifting in under the correct meteorological circumstances.
