Kalyan MAP AIR QUALITY ANALYSIS AND STATISTICS

How much information about air quality can be seen on the air pollution map for Kalyan?

The air pollution map for Kalyan is very easy to access from the main city page, A simple click on the map icon will open a new page which is totally dedicated to air quality in and around the city of Kalyan.

The first striking feature must be the overall colour of the background of the map which takes on a colour which reflects the current state of the air. It is currently a deep red which unfortunately indicates that the air quality is “Unhealthy”. A brief explanation of the various colours can be seen in the legend at the foot of the page. The colours range from pale green to dark maroon and are used throughout the entire IQAir website to avoid confusion.

The viewer will also notice several coloured circles dotted across the map. Most of them are over Mumbai but are still full of information. Each disc shows the approximate location of a ground-level air monitoring station and the colour it takes on is a reflection of the air quality in that area. There is also a number displayed in the centre which is the United States Air Quality Index reading or US AQI for short. This figure is calculated by taking measurements for six of the most commonly found pollutants in city air. They are most often both sizes of particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide, ozone and carbon monoxide. Once established, this reading is then used as a metric when comparing air quality in different locations across the globe. It is fully endorsed by the World Health Organisation (WHO). If any individual disc is selected then another page will open which contains all the information about air quality in that specific area.

Looking back at the main page, it can be seen that at the start of November 2022, Kalyan was experiencing a period of air quality that was classified as being “Unhealthy for sensitive groups” with a US AQI reading of 145. The main pollutant measured was PM2.5 with a recorded level of 53.5 µg/m³ which is over ten times the suggested target figure of 5 µg/m³ as recommended by the WHO.

Directly underneath the air pollution map for Kalyan can be seen the number of contributors there are that provide the air monitoring stations. Currently, there is only one station that is provided and operated by the local government.

Are areas of higher pollution levels easy to see on the air pollution map for Kalyan?

Areas of higher levels of pollution can be identified in a couple of ways. Looking for the discs with the darker colours and the higher numbers will show where the areas of high pollution are.

Alternatively, by scrolling down the page beneath the air pollution map for Kalyan can be seen a table which ranks the stations according to their cleanliness. Because there is only one station in the city, it is both the dirtiest and also the cleanest. It is situated at Khadakpada, Kalyan – MPCB and currently shows a US AQI reading of 145 which is classified as being “Unhealthy for sensitive groups”.

The next table reveals the most popular station and the number of loyal followers they each have. This station at Khadakpada, Kalyan – MPCB has over 12,300 followers.

How much more interesting information about air quality can be found on the air pollution map for Kalyan?

There is more information to be gleaned from the air pollution map for Kalyan but in order to see it all. The page needs to be viewed in full-screen mode otherwise certain aspects will remain unclear. The icon to view the screen at maximum can be found at the top of the screen.

When viewed in this way, there will be a list of four options that appear on the left-hand side of the screen. The first option shows the location of all the ground-level air monitoring stations in the city and the neighbouring areas.

The second option shows the position of any wildfires that might be burning in the vicinity and needs to be considered alongside option four which shows the speed and direction of the prevailing winds and will give a good indication as to where the ensuing smoke may blow. At the start of November 2022, there were no such icons to be seen on the map.

The third option is the most dramatic as it can change the background colour of the map to reflect the current air quality. Currently, it is a dark red which does indeed indicate very poor-quality air. Some viewers may find the colours too intense and distracting, in which case, the option can be deactivated and the map will revert to a more subdued set of colours.

More information can be seen on the right-hand side of the screen in the form of a table. This table lists the world cities according to their levels of air pollution. By default, only seven cities are shown, but the full range can be seen once the table is expanded and a new page is opened.

Can it be seen where the polluted air comes from on the air quality map for Kalyan?

The source of polluted air is not directly shown on the air pollution map for Kalyan, but carbon emissions and air pollution have been a cause of concern in recent years, especially in the wake of the pandemic in which a large number of people succumbed to the virus because their respiratory system could not handle such a disease. Apart from this, during the second wave of the COVID-19 epidemic, many studies found that there is a close relationship between the pollution figures at the district level and the cases of COVID-19. In areas where fossil fuels are used more, more cases of COVID-19 were reported. Although we believe that poor living conditions and infections are the root cause of respiratory diseases, the truth is that the toxic air present in the environment also has the potential to cause more harm than cigarettes.
