Which cities or areas are affected by the wildfire?
The wildfires have directly impacted the following areas:
- Athens, Greece
- Bulqiza, Albania
- Bursa, Turkey
- Kryoneri, Greece
- Kythera, Greece
- Prizren, Kosovo
- Strumyani, Bulgaria
- Tran, Bulgaria
Homes, forests, and farmland have been destroyed, with Bursa’s eastern suburbs and Bulqiza’s landscapes severely impacted (5). Smoke has degraded air quality across these regions, posing health risks.
What is the current containment status of the wildfire?
The containment efforts vary. In Greece, over 50 fires remain active, with limited containment in Kryoneri and Kythera due to 38°C (101°F) heat and strong winds. Turkey’s Bursa Wildfire is uncontained, with 1,900 firefighters deployed.
Bulgaria reports 236 active fires, many uncontained, with EU aid requested. Kosovo has extinguished 17 fires, but 12 remain active. Albania’s fires in Bulqiza are challenging to control due to terrain and heat.
Are there any evacuation orders or alerts in place?
Evacuations are widespread. In Greece, Kryoneri residents were ordered to evacuate, with alerts across Athens suburbs. Turkey evacuated over 3,500 people from Bursa’s northeastern villages.
Bulgaria issued code-red warnings for half the country, with evacuations in Tran and Strumyani. Albania evacuated thousands from Bulqiza, and Kosovo issued alerts in Prizren.
