Delhi MAP AIR QUALITY ANALYSIS AND STATISTICS

How high are the pollution levels shown on the air quality maps in Delhi?

The pollution levels shown on the air quality maps in Delhi are high for many days of the year and for a huge variety of reasons, some of which will be briefly addressed in this article. For more in-depth information on the subject, the regular city page can be reviewed for the numerous causes of air pollution within Delhi. The air pollution maps and air quality maps show high pollution readings in Delhi due to its immense population size, which is growing at a considerable rate, both from within as well as from the outside as people move into Delhi for work. With masses of people come a large number of vehicles, particularly smaller, personal ones such as motorbikes and cars.

Air pollution maps can show high US AQI readings for much of the year and will show particularly high levels in any area that is subject to a large number of people moving through it on a daily basis. Main roads, busy highways and other locations that typically bear the brunt of rush hour traffic will have high readings on the air quality maps. The US AQI readings shown on the air quality map are going to be showing 'moderate' levels of air pollution at the best of times, and will more commonly be showing air quality classifications of 'unhealthy for sensitive groups' and above for much of the year. Meteorological factors can also play a part in higher readings on the air pollution maps, with heavy sunshine causing certain pollutants to be formed within Delhi (mainly ozone, which is produced as a result of the various oxides of nitrogen and other chemicals or gases undergoing a reaction when subject to larger amounts of solar radiation). Lack of rain and wind can also cause Delhi to have higher US AQI readings on its air quality maps, with wind being one of the strongest factors in removing pollution from the air. Whilst rain can also help to clear the air, it is far less effective, only tamping down larger particles in the air and leaving many of the ultrafine particles and gases as they were.

Due to the above-mentioned reasons, along with others such as emissions from larger, heavy-duty or freight vehicles, particulate matter given off from construction sites, road repairs and even poorly paved roads, the air quality maps show high pollution readings. In regards to the classifications, during the earlier months of the year, as displayed as an average in March 2022, an 'unhealthy' air quality rating was shown. This requires a US AQI reading of 151 and above, and as the name indicates, when such a reading appears on an air quality map, the air will be quite detrimental to one’s health. This 'unhealthy' rating is color-coded as red, with all of the higher air pollution ratings having darker colors (whilst the cleaner ones have lighter colors such as green and blue). When pollution levels rise to particularly prominent heights, colors such as purple and maroon will be a common sight on the air quality maps for Delhi. In closing, as Delhi maintains a consistently poor level of air quality for much of the year, the US AQI readings shown on the air quality maps will always be high, with only brief periods of respite. Air quality maps can always be followed to see when the US AQI readings do drop to cleaner levels, and also which parts of Delhi and its surrounding regions have the best level of air cleanliness.

What information can you learn about pollution from air quality maps in Delhi?

When looking at the air quality maps for Delhi, one can take decisions regarding what activities to conduct, as well as when the best time may be to conduct them. Although this is generally a harder sell for places such as Delhi, with severe levels of air pollution occurring throughout a majority of the year, there will always be pockets within the city, and certain months, whereby the pollution levels drop to slightly cleaner levels. The air pollution maps show where the cleanest spots are, and as they are fed constant streams of data from a multitude of air quality monitoring stations, the figures are updated throughout the day with a great degree of accuracy. Of note is that some discrepancies can or may arise when referring to air quality maps, as a strong wind may blow clouds of smoke over to a nearby monitoring station and away from your current location. As such, extremely high readings may be seen on the air quality maps but the air itself may appear to be of a better level. Such errors are possible and should be taken into consideration, although barring circumstances such as these, the readings are largely accurate.

In regards to what you can learn from viewing air pollution maps for Delhi, informed decisions about committing to outdoor activities can be made, particularly if they are strenuous ones such as jogging or other outdoor sports. If the air quality maps show particularly high levels of US AQI readings, then it may be a better idea to reschedule or even find a cleaner location on the map. For those with health issues, or for those that simply want to keep their exposure levels to a minimum, the air quality maps will show consistent readings throughout Delhi that will inform users as to which areas remain the cleanest throughout the year. For those that suffer from underlying health issues that are made worse by pollution exposure, these cleaner areas may aid considerably in reducing their health issues.

Why are air pollution maps necessary to use in Delhi?

As has been touched upon in the previous two questions, it can be quickly reiterated that due to such extreme levels of pollution being seen year after year in Delhi, using air quality maps will be a valuable commodity, or even an outright essential in safeguarding their health. Another reason for air quality maps is that they can also help governing bodies keep tabs on areas that have particularly high levels of pollution, so that any possible action may be taken in an attempt to control or at least lessen these pollution levels.

What health issues can be avoided through the use of air quality maps in Delhi?

When the US AQI levels are shown to be high on the air quality maps, which they are likely to be for much of the year in Delhi, one can take measures such as avoiding outdoor activities, sealing doors and windows, as well as wearing fine particle filtering masks. Some of the many, many health issues that can arise when individuals are exposed to high levels of pollution as shown on the air quality maps include ones such as respiratory infections, ranging from the throat down to the chest, which is quite a health hazard and can lead to excessive coughing and potential scarring of the lung tissue. Scarification of the lung tissue may also occur when excesses of fine particles are inhaled (with these ultrafine particles also being figured into the US AQI reading, so generally when the readings are high, the particle concentration will also be elevated). Illnesses under the chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) bracket may also appear, which includes asthma and emphysema. By checking the air quality maps consistently, individuals may be able to go about their daily business with a better idea of where the peaks in air pollution are occurring, and avoid them if possible. Other health issues correlated with high readings on the air pollution maps include arterial blockages, a cause of heart attacks, as well as strokes, angina, arrhythmias and premature death all occurring as a direct result.
