AirVisual app status in Vietnam

AirVisual became the target of a coordinated campaign in Vietnam to discredit the platform. Learn more about this controversy and how AirVisual fights back against disinformation campaigns.

Due to an episode of serious air pollution in late 2019, Hanoi has at times topped the list of AirVisual’s “major city ranking”, a live pollution ranking of around 90 major global cities. This has helped to raise awareness of air quality issues in Vietnam.

But AirVisual also became the target of a coordinated campaign in Vietnam to discredit us.

AirVisual received numerous abusive and threatening messages posted on Facebook as well as on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. As a result, the AirVisual apps and Facebook page were temporarily inaccessible in Vietnam.

This wasn’t the first time that revealing the level of air pollution in a city created fear and led to attacks on the AirVisual community.

Millions of air quality data contributors and community members have always strongly supported AirVisual’s mission to raise awareness of air pollution around the world, and IQAir AirVisual gives a heartfelt thank you to the people in Vietnam who took the time to share their kind support during this controversy.

IQAir AirVisual received thousands of support messages via Facebook, email, the AirVisual website, and app reviews – and this support has been essential as AirVisual works with Apple, Google, and Facebook in confirming that AirVisual was unfairly attacked and to help make the AirVisual apps available again in Vietnam.
