Bien Hoa MAP AIR QUALITY ANALYSIS AND STATISTICS

Does the air quality map for Bien Hoa indicate the current level of air pollution?

When first looking at the air quality map for Bien Hoa, the user will see some coloured discs that each contain a number. These discs indicate the air quality through the use of colours. The cleanest air has green coloured discs and they gradually get darker until the worst air quality which is represented by dark maroon colours. In the centre of each disc, a number will be seen. This is the US AQI number. It is used as an international set of metrics in order to compare air quality cities across the globe. It is endorsed by the World Health Organisation (WHO). It is calculated by measuring the most prolific air pollutants using their own formula to do so.

Sometimes there are only a few discs on the air quality map because a lot of data is collected using satellites. This is the case for Bien Hoa because most of the information about the air quality comes from satellite data. The meaning of the various colours of the discs is explained in the legend at the foot of the map.

What other information can be gleaned from the air pollution map for Bien Hoa?

When a disc is selected the site will take you to the dedicated page for that area of the city. Once there you will see all the information you need to know about that monitoring station and its environs.

Other information shown on the interactive air pollution map for Bien Hoa is the location of the air monitors, the location of any wildfires which are burning in the vicinity, the air quality and the direction of the wind. This is very useful when studied in conjunction with the location of the wildfires. It will give a good indication as to which way the smoke from the fire will blow. Currently, there is a fire blazing less than 40 kilometres away from Bien Hoa.

From the main city page, it can be seen that currently, Bien Hoa is experiencing a period of air quality that is classified as being “Unhealthy for sensitive groups” with a US AQI reading of 108. The main pollutant is seen to be PM2.5 which was measured at 38.2*µg/m³ which is 7.6 times higher than the target figure as recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO). They recommend 5 µg/m³, or less.

You will also see a forecast for the next few days and the real-time Vietnam city rankings which makes comparisons to other Vietnamese cities. It shows their US AQI numbers so can be interesting to compare with Bien Hoa.

Does the air pollution map for Bien Hoa indicate where the worst air quality is?

By looking at the air pollution map for Bien Hoa in full screen, it can be seen where the darker coloured discs are which indicate poor quality air. Local people who know the area might be able to recognise the industrial zones around the city because of the darker coloured discs. Very often the city centre can be a darker colour too, due to the high volume of traffic at certain times of the day, usually rush hour.

The province of Dong Nai where Bien Hoa is located, is a dynamic economic development area, so freight transport as well as passenger transport thrives. According to the Department of Transport and Communications, up to now, there are about 60,000 vehicles in the area, which are cars, engaged in the transportation business (passenger vehicles, freight cars). Due to the large number of vehicles with high operating frequency, the amount of emissions to the environment also increases. Many of these heavy-duty vehicles use diesel as a fuel which is very polluting when compared to other forms of fuel.

While vehicles such as cars are monitored for emission quality, circulating motorbikes have not been strictly controlled. Most motorbikes are not maintained and repaired during use, so emissions and consumption are high, leading to a high risk of air pollution.

Where does all the air pollution come from in Bien Hoa?

The results of air environment monitoring for 3 consecutive years and 9 months show that the AQI index in the area is relatively stable, the parameters at most of the monitoring locations are up to Vietnamese standards. However, there are still some areas with localized air pollution at some monitoring times, mainly dust in mining areas and concentrated traffic areas.

In addition, the results from 2 automatic monitoring stations were continuously recorded, and the AQI was within the allowable standard threshold. However, pollution still occurs locally at some intersections with a high concentration of vehicles at peak hours. From these results, it can be concluded that Bien Hoa has not faced the risk of air pollution on a large scale.

According to statistics of the Provincial Police, the number of new car registrations was more than eight thousand vehicles and nearly 64,500 motorbikes. The total number of motorized vehicles under management in the area is currently nearly 2.4 million vehicles (accounting for about 94 per cent), an increase of nearly 151,000 vehicles. However, this is only the number of vehicles officially registered in Dong Nai, the number of vehicles fluctuates even more because there are still a large number of foreign vehicles.

PM2.5 is a measurement used often on the air pollution map of Bien Hoa, but where does it originate?

PM2.5 is dust particles less than 2.5 microns in size, which is approximately 1 in 25 parts of a human hair diameter. So small that the human nose hair that filters dust can't be filtered. Therefore, it can get into the respiratory tract, bloodstream and into other organs in the body. The dust is a carrier that carries other substances such as cadmium, mercury, heavy metals and other carcinogens.

The main sources of PM2.5 particles are through the burning of charcoal briquettes in the home, road transport, in particular from diesel-engine vehicles and from the manufacturing industries and power generation.

Most countries are actively trying to reduce the reliance on fossil fuels over the next decade.
