Amasya MAP AIR QUALITY ANALYSIS AND STATISTICS

How much information about air quality can be found on the air pollution map for Amasya?

There is a lot of valuable information about air quality on the air pollution map for Amasya and it is easy to access from the main city page. Clicking on the map icon will open a new page which is filled with the latest information about air quality.

When this new page first opens, the viewer will notice the overall colour of the background. This is a direct indication of the current air quality. The colours in use can range from pale green to dark maroon and are standard colours across the entire IQAir website. As the colours get darker, the air quality lessens.

Several coloured discs will be seen distributed across the city which show the sites of the ground-level air quality monitoring stations which provide the city with data about air quality. Each of these sites can be explored further by choosing the disc so that a new page will open specific to that area.

There is a number displayed at the centre of these discs which is the United States Air Quality Index reading or US AQI for short. The figure is calculated by taking the measurements of up to six of the most prolific pollutants found in the city air. They are usually both sizes of Particulate Matter (PM2.5 and PM10), sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide and ozone. It is endorsed by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and is then used as a metric when comparing air quality in different cities across the globe.

Jumping back to the main city page, it can be seen in the coloured banner across the top of the page that in the middle of March 2023, Amasya was experiencing a period of “Moderate” air quality with a US AQI reading of 60. The colour of the banner itself also reflects this level of pollution. The main pollutant was found to be PM2.5 with a recorded level of 16.4 µg/m³ which is over three times the suggested target figure of 5 µg/m³, as recommended by the WHO.

Immediately below the air pollution map for Amasya can be seen the number of contributors there are that collect and collate the data regarding air quality. Currently, there are two stations operated by the government department known as the Ministry of Environment and Urbanisation.

Can any more interesting facts and figures be found on the air pollution map for Amasya?

There are many more interesting facts and figures about air quality on the air pollution map for Amasya but the page needs to be in full-screen mode before all the information is visible. There is an icon at the top of the page which will reopen the desired page at maximum size so no information will remain hidden.

Four options should now be visible on the left-hand side of the screen, each of which can be turned on and off to see the effects they each have on the map.

The first option shows the sites of the ground-level air monitoring stations which can each be explored further by selecting the disc of choice. A new page will then open which is dedicated to that specific area of the city. This can be very informative if travel is imminent.

The second option shows the position of any wildfires that might be burning in the local area. At the time of writing, there were no such icons on the map which indicates the absence of any raging fires. If fires are detected then option four needs to be studied because it shows the speed and direction of the prevailing winds and will give a good indication of where the ensuing smoke might blow.

Option number three can greatly affect the map because it changes the overall colour to reflect the current quality of the air. Some viewers may find this unusual and distracting on a map, in which case, it can be deactivated so the colours can return to normal.

More facts and figures can be found on the right-hand side of the screen where a table will be seen. This table ranks the top seven most polluted cities in the world. By opening the full-ranking section, the rest of the participating cities will be listed in descending order.

Immediately below the contributor’s category is found a table that lists the most polluted area of the city as discovered by the closest station. The current most polluted station is at Sehzade showing a US AQI reading of 61, which is classified as being “Moderate”.

Below that is another list which shows which stations are the most popular and have the highest number of followers. Again, this is the station at Sehzade with 47 loyal followers.

Is the source of the polluted air shown on the air quality map for Amasya?

Whilst the direct source of the polluted air is not directly shown on the air quality map for Amasya, the major source of air pollution in Amasya is industrial plants. The chemical and plastic industry are major contributors to this environmental issue. The factories often emit hazardous air pollutants, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which can cause a variety of health issues. In addition, emissions from vehicles, such as motorbikes and cars, are a major problem. Many of these vehicles are old and therefore lack the modern technology that newer models have which reduces their pollutive levels. Amasya is home to many small businesses, most of which are powered by diesel generators, and this also adds to the pollution.

Air pollution is reaching alarming levels and it's having an adverse effect on the well-being of the local community. This city of 100,000 inhabitants was once known as one of the most picturesque locations in the Black Sea Region, but pollution is now fast eroding the city’s appeal.

Does a higher level of air pollution cause health problems in Amasya?

Amasya’s air pollution problem is causing serious health issues for its residents. Respiratory problems, such as asthma, are on the rise, and studies have linked air pollution to an increased risk of cancer. Additionally, pollution levels can contribute to other health issues, including an increased risk of cardiovascular and nervous system diseases.

The local government has taken steps to reduce air pollution in Amasya, but more work needs to be done. To begin with, it’s important to raise awareness among locals about the risks of air pollution. Emissions standards for industries should be more strictly enforced and reduced, where possible.
