Antwerpen MAP AIR QUALITY ANALYSIS AND STATISTICS

Is there a lot of good quality information about air pollution on the air quality map for Antwerp?

The air pollution map for Antwerp is very easy to access from the main city page. The icon can be seen at the top of that page and when clicked on, will open a new page which is dedicated to information about air pollution.

One of the first things to notice will be the overall colour of the map which carries this colour to reflect the current level of air quality. There are also several coloured discs dotted across the map. The explanation about the significance of the colours is explained in the legend at the foot of the page. These colours are standard across the entire IQAir site. The colour of the discs is also dictated by these standard colours.

The viewer will also notice a number at the centre of these discs. This is the United States Air Quality Index number or US AQI for short. Six of the most prolific pollutants found in city air are measured and this US AQI number is calculated from those levels. The most common pollutants are both sizes of Particulate Matter (PM2.5 and PM10), nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide, ozone and carbon monoxide. When established, the figure is used as a metric when comparing air quality in different cities across the globe. The whole system is endorsed by the World Health Organisation (WHO). If a specific area of the city is of special interest, a click on the nearest disc will open another page which will be dedicated to the air quality in that area.

When consulting the main city page, it can be seen that during the middle of October 2022, Antwerp was enjoying a period of “Good” quality air with a US AQI reading of just 23. The main pollutant was found to be PM2.5 with a recorded level of 5.5 µg/m³. This is slightly over the WHO recommended target figure of 5 µg/m³.

Directly below the air pollution map for Antwerp can be found the number of stations which provide all the data about air quality. There are currently six stations all controlled and operated by government departments.

Can any more information be seen on the air pollution map for Antwerp?

There is more information to be gleaned from the air quality map for Antwerp, but the map needs to be viewed in full-screen mode otherwise some extra information might remain obscured. The “full-screen” selection is at the top right of the screen.

Once selected, a choice of four options should appear down the left-hand side of the page. These can all be looked at individually to fully understand what each one does.

The first option shows the position of the ground-level air monitoring stations which appear as coloured discs on the map. If they appear to be superimposed on top of each other, they will separate once the map is slowly expanded.

The second option reveals the location of any wildfires which might be burning in the vicinity. In October 2022, there were two icons near Ghent. Option four needs to be considered now because it shows the speed of the wind and the direction it is blowing in. This will give a good idea of where the smoke might go.

The third option dictates the overall colour of the map as a reflection of the current air quality. Currently coloured green, it indicates “Good” air quality. Some viewers may find this colouration to be too intense, so by disabling it, the colours will revert to a more subdued palette.

Over on the far right of the screen can be found a table which ranks world cities according to their levels of air pollution. By default, only seven cities are shown but there is an option to explore this topic further by selecting the button to open a new page with all participating cities listed in descending order.

Are areas of high pollution shown on the air quality map for Antwerp?

These areas can be identified by looking for the disc with the darkest colour and/or the highest number. Alternatively, by looking just below the air pollution map for Antwerp will be seen a list which ranks all the stations according to their level of pollution. Currently, the one at the top of the list is the station at Borgerhout which displays a US AQI reading of 21. Even though it is the dirtiest in the city, with a figure such as that, the air quality can still be classified as being “Good”.

This station also happens to be the most popular with over 3,500 followers. This information can be seen just below the list of polluted stations on the same page.

Can the source of the polluted air be seen on the air quality map for Antwerp?

The source of air pollution is not shown directly on the air pollution map for Antwerp, however, in Antwerp, the industry in the port has an influence on air pollution. But traffic also plays an important role. The high concentrations of nitrogen dioxide over large parts of the country can also be explained by the large number of diesel cars and the dense road network. Traffic remains the biggest culprit. Because people are more often and much closer exposed to the pollution from the exhaust pipes of cars than to the dirty air from the chimneys of the port of Antwerp.

PM2.5 is used as a benchmark on the air pollution map for Antwerp, but what is it?

As well as gaseous pollutants, the ambient air can also be polluted by particles. These particles (in suspension, liquid or solid), of varying composition and size, are sometimes referred to as "aerosols". They are often catalogued under the heading of “suspended matter” and they are often referred to as PM.

This suspended matter is usually classified on the basis of the 'aerodynamic diameter'. The aerodynamic diameter of a dust particle is the diameter of a spherical particle that exhibits the same behaviour in the ambient air as a dust particle (which does not necessarily have a spherical shape). In the context of air quality problems, particulate matter is especially important.

Particulate matter such as PM10 and PM2.5 is defined as a fraction of particles with an aerodynamic diameter smaller than 10 and 2.5 µm respectively (1 µm = 1 millionth of a meter or 1 thousandth of a millimetre). For comparison, the average diameter of a human hair is 50-70 µm.
