China Air Quality Alert

Is the air quality good in China?

As of October 12, 2026, air quality in northern and central China is poor, with major cities experiencing air quality in the "unhealthy" range and high PM2.5 concentrations, posing serious health risks to residents, especially children and the elderly.

By 2:30 PM (Chinese Standard Time, GMT+8), several urban centers have recorded AQI readings between 100 and 200, prompting health warnings. Residents are advised to limit outdoor activity, keep windows closed, wear masks when outside, and use air purifiers indoors.

While conditions remain poor, China’s average PM2.5 concentration in 2025 was 29.6 µg/m3, equivalent to an AQI of 87, classified as "moderate". This level is nearly 5.92 times higher than the WHO annual guideline of 5 µg/m3, placing China among the world’s 20 most polluted countries in 2025.

Which cities are affected by bad air quality in China?

On October 12, 2026, several major cities across China are reporting poor air quality. Some of the affected cities include:

When will the air quality improve in China?

China’s PM2.5 concentrations follow a well-documented U-shaped seasonal pattern, peaking in winter from December through February and reaching their lowest point in summer. October marks the beginning of this seasonal deterioration, as autumn cooling and increasing stagnation begin to raise air pollution across northern China ahead of the official coal-fired heating season starting November (1).

Short-term improvement depends on wind, rain, and stronger atmospheric mixing. Lasting progress depends on continued enforcement of China’s clean energy transition and emission controls (2).

What is causing poor air quality in China?

The root causes of air pollution in China include dependence on fossil fuels, coal combustion, biomass burning, traffic and waste incineration emissions, industrial pollution, and soil dust, with coal and other fossil fuels exploited despite renewable investments (3).

As temperatures drop, residential coal combustion becomes the dominant driver of PM2.5 across northern China, contributing approximately 46% of concentrations in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. Temperature inversions and air stagnation further trap emissions from coal-fired power plants, industrial zones, and vehicle exhaust near the surface, amplifying pollution across major cities (4).
