Thane MAP AIR QUALITY ANALYSIS AND STATISTICS

What information is there about air quality on the air quality map for Thane?

When the air quality map for Thane is first opened from the main city page, the viewer will immediately see many coloured discs set against the map which has a dark yellow background. This background colour represents the overall air quality of the region. The colours and their meaning are fully explained in the legend at the bottom of the screen. The colours range from pale green which shows good quality air to yellow, orange, red, purple to maroon which indicates the worst air quality. The same colours are used throughout the entire IQAir website to keep things standard.

Each disc contains a number which is the US AQI reading and is used as an international standard. It is endorsed by the World Health Organisation (WHO). It is derived by measuring up to six of the most prolific pollutants and calculated from their readings.

Once an individual disc is selected, an entirely new page opens with information specific to that station which is represented by the position of the disc on the map. There are several discs in the vicinity but only one over the city itself. This station is operated by the Central Control Pollution Board and is locally known as the Pimpleshwar Mandir, Thane - MPCB, Thane. The levels of all six of the main pollutants are listed on the page but the main one is PM2.5 with a level of 35 µg/m³. The figures are quoted in microns per cubic metre. The target figure recommended by the WHO is 5 µg/m³ so this level is seven times higher than that.

There is also some brief advice as to how best to protect yourself when the air quality is this poor. Doors and windows should be closed to prevent more dirty air from entering the rooms and people who are sensitive to poor quality air should avoid staying outdoors for too long.

Can any other information be seen on the air pollution map for Thane?

Once the air pollution map for Thane is accessed, the viewer will see a list of four choices on the left-hand side of the screen which can be turned off if desired. They show the location of the ground-level air monitors and the location of any fires burning in the vicinity of the city. They also show the air quality and the direction of the prevailing winds. This can be very useful when deciding if the smoke from the fires will affect the air quality over the city. On the right-hand side of the page is a table which ranks cities throughout the world, according to their air quality. This can be interesting when comparing your home city with others.

The stations are listed in descending order so it is easy to see where the dirtiest air is. Many local residents may recognise these areas as industrial zones or areas of other polluting activity. The air quality in the city centre may vary throughout the day due to the varying amounts of traffic on the roads. The worst periods will be the rush hour commute. A person can choose to “Follow” a station if they wish to be informed of any noticeable change in the air quality. There is also an app which is available to download which will keep you informed of the most up-to-date statistics in real-time.

The most amount of information can be gained by reading both these pages together. From the main city page, it is seen that the air quality in the second quarter of 2022 was classified as being “Moderate” with a US AQI reading of 99.

Are areas of poor air quality easily seen on the air pollution map for Thane?

As previously stated, the numbers on the discs are a good indication of the air quality in that area. The higher the number, the poorer the air quality. If a lot of the discs are overlapping each other and are not easy to distinguish, then the list of stations beneath the map will clarify which is the dirtiest area. The stations are listed in descending order with the worst one at the start of the list.

Is the source of the air pollution shown on the air quality map for Thane?

The source of the air pollution is not shown on the air pollution map for Thane, only the areas of poor air quality.

As with most large cities anywhere in the world, a lot of air pollution is caused by the huge volume of traffic that regularly use the city roads. Many of the vehicles in Thane are older than 15 years old and therefore have not been fitted with pollution reduction parts. There is also a lot of construction taking place which involves the use of heavy-duty trucks which are powered by diesel fuel. This is a particularly heavy pollutant which becomes worse as vehicles age.

The Municipal Corporation is about to buy 80 electric buses as a way to reduce air pollution in the city but was questioned about the lack of recharging facilities throughout the city. There is also a cycle route that has been built but its effectiveness was questioned because it remains unconnected to other similar routes.

Four devices have been ordered for dust pollution control in the area. These devices will spray water over an area of thirty square metres to stop the dust from rising into the atmosphere.

PM2.5 is often mentioned on the air quality map for Thane, but what is it?

Airborne particulate matter (PM) is not a single pollutant, but it is a mixture of many chemical compounds. It is a complex mixture of solids and aerosols composed of small droplets of liquid, dry solid fragments, and solid cores with liquid coatings. Particles vary widely in size, shape and chemical composition, and may contain inorganic ions, metallic compounds, elemental carbon, organic compounds, and compounds from the earth’s crust. Particles are defined by their diameter for air quality regulatory purposes. Those with a diameter of 10 microns or less (PM10) are inhalable into the lungs and can induce adverse health effects. Fine particulate matter is defined as particles that are 2.5 microns or less in diameter (PM2.5).

Because of its smaller profile, PM2.5 can travel further into the lungs as far as the alveoli from where they can transfer to the bloodstream.
